Parents may want to check the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry before taking their children door-to-door for Halloween candy.
The registry allows a user to type in an address to access a map that can be customized to show the registered sex offenders living within one, three and five miles. Users can see photos and conviction information for offenders.
Mecklenburg County has 923 offenders, including 815 in Charlotte, 12 in Matthews, eight in Pineville and five in Mint Hill.
For example, 14 offenders live within a three-mile radius of Mint Hill Town Hall, including one convicted of a sexual offense of a 10-year-old and another found guilty of taking indecent liberties with a 10-year-old.
Matthews Town Hall is even scarier, with 22 offenders within a three-mile radius.
While the registry is designed to empower the community with information, it shouldn’t be used to harass people. Visit www.sexoffender.ncsbi.gov for details.
