Letter to the Editor: June 22

In response to “Matthews out of ‘insurance business’ “in the June 15 to 21 issue.

‘Proud’ to see Matthews health insurance deal
Congratulations to Matthews Mayor (Jim) Taylor and the Board of Commissioners for passing the measure calling for town employees to purchase their own health insurance, thus saving taxpayers well over a half-million dollars, as reported in the Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly.

I’m certain that it was with great thoughtfulness and hard work that Town Manager Hazen Blodgett and the board agreed on the wisdom of this decision. With austerity measures being reviewed in governments across the globe, I am proud to see my local government thinking outside the box. Thousands of people in the private sector have experienced astonishing blows to their economic situations – many beyond their wildest dreams or control. Thank you, town leaders, for paying attention.
Kudos to Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly Editor Kara Lopp and her staff for keeping the citizens of this town well-informed on issues affecting our everyday lives – the good, the bad and the ugly. This paper’s continued commitment to good local journalism is something that I, personally, appreciate and will continue to support.

I am proud to be a citizen of this town.
