In response to “No roundabout for Matthews-Mint Hill/N.C. 51 intersection” in the June 1 to 7 issue.
No roundabout is the right way
I am extremely pleased that Matthews town commissioners decided against a roundabout at Matthews-Mint Hill Road and N.C. 51. I experienced many roundabouts on a recent trip to Europe and do not have anything good to say about them. They can be very confusing and do not seem to alleviate traffic congestion. My friend in Europe says some roundabouts have actually made traffic worse, especially at rush hour.
My friend who lives in Raleigh, where there are two roundabouts, says there are constant wrecks from people not knowing the right of way.
So, thank you commissioners for not bringing these problems to our area.
