MATTHEWS – Covenant Day made a statement on the diamond with their recent two-game sweep of rival Charlotte Latin.
Trailing by one run, Covenant Day exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning and cruised to the 6-1 win on April 10.
Jon Rossi doubled and drove in two runs. Cooper Andrews went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Robert Stone scattered five hits over six innings and struck out eight to get the win. Jackson Bertlesen made it interesting by waking the bases loaded in the seventh inning, but got out of the jam unscathed.
The following day, Zach Brighton provided the fireworks as the Lions swept the series with a 9-7 win.
Brighton, a senior outfielder, went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs to lead the offense. Philip Abner added a solo home run. Connor Ashley and Carson Dunlap drove in runs.
Rossi struck out six and allowed three runs over six innings, but again the bullpen struggled some. In this one, three pitchers allowed three runs over the course of the final frame, but Abner got the final out to earn the save.
