Andrew Stark: Last year, you struggled out of the gate, but rebounded to win the conference. That has to give you confidence coming into this season.
Cedric Gray: It gave us a little confidence, but this year we have a schedule change and are playing a lot lesser opponents so we’re feeling pretty good. We locked down the conference last year, but I think we’re going to have a big year.
AS: What’s the key to that?
CG: We have to stay focused because we’ve been going really hard. We need to keep that going and we’ll be fine.
AS: There have been some coaching uncertainty, but coach Jachym has been there the whole time so maybe that was the best call.
CG: He’s a person that everyone can trust. He’s been there since the school opened and he is doing a great job.
AS: You committed a while ago to North Carolina, but had a host of other Power 5 schools interested. What was it about that program that drew you toward it?
CG: Their honesty and love. As a lot of people don’t know, the recruiting process is not all roses and love. There’s ups and downs, and there’s people that will lie to you, so I think the biggest thing for me was the honesty. I loved the coaches and I think UNC as a whole is a plus. It’s a great education and when you go into a job interview with that on your resume it’s impressive. I think it was an all-around good choice.
AS: You guys struggled to run the ball last year, so that has to be fixed. What else do you see as a key to reaching the potential this team has?
CG: The biggest thing is stopping people. I think the offense will be fine, and I really like the defense this year. We’ve got to stop them.
