MATTHEWS – The people behind Seaboard Brewery, Taproom & Wine Bar and The Exchange Pizza Depot are preparing to open the Portrait Gallery Restaurant.
The restaurant will have a casual feel, with a menu of small plates designed for sharing.
The new restaurant occupies the space formerly home to the original Portrait Gallery art & photo studio, behind the Weaver, Bennett and Bland Attorneys building, at 118 E. Charles St. The historic building is more than 100 years old.
Keeping true to the original Portrait Gallery Studio, the restaurant’s décor is designed to make the diner feel as though they are in an art gallery. It will feature famous paintings, white marble bar and table tops, sculptures and an elegant but vibrant atmosphere.
Managing Partner Alistair Williams, a professor at Johnson & Wales University, describes the menu as family-style, with sharing plates and authentic dishes that combine the highest quality fresh, local ingredients.
The European-inspired style of dining focuses on fresh, house-made cuisine influenced by seasonal, regionally sourced/curated ingredients.
The menu will be seasonal, with signature fall dishes that include bacon-wrapped N.C. pork loin with balsamic cherries and roasted local trout with smoked butter. Pricing for most plates will be in the range of $8 to $12.
The bar offers handcrafted cocktails, wines from artisanal wineries and a limited offering of craft beers, including Seaboard Brewing.
The Portrait Gallery Restaurant is scheduled to open some time in October. Track its progress by visiting www.pgmatthews.com.
