Parents may want to check the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry before taking their children door-to-door for Halloween candy.
The registry allows a user to type in an address to access a map that can be customized to show the registered sex offenders living within one, three and five miles. Users can see photos and detailed conviction information for offenders.
Not counting incarcerated people, Mecklenburg County has 921 offenders, including 838 in Charlotte, 11 in Matthews, seven in Pineville and five in Mint Hill.
For example, 26 offenders live within a three-mile radius of Mint Hill Town Hall, including one convicted of rape and others found guilty of taking indecent liberties with children as young as 10 years old.
Matthews Town Hall has 22 offenders living within a three-mile radius.
While the registry is designed to empower the community with information, it shouldn’t be used to harass people. Visit www.sexof fender.ncsbi.gov for details.
