INDIAN TRAIL – Common Heart distributed frozen turkeys and other foods to make a Thanksgiving meal Nov. 17 as part of its 12th-annual Great Turkey Countdown.
The charity usually needs hundreds of volunteers at its Common Cupboard to help with the food pantry’s biggest delivery day. The baskets of turkeys and fixings benefit families throughout Union County, Matthews and Mint Hill.
The first Great Turkey Countdown started on Facebook in 2007. Today, the tradition continues at Facebook.com/TheCommonHeart.
“When we started this Thanksgiving program 11 years ago, we gave away just over 100 Thanksgiving baskets,” Executive Director Keith Adams said. “The effort – thanks to the community’s generosity – has grown steadily since then and this year we hope we can serve 1,000 families.”
