MATTHEWS – The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization has voted unanimously to delay part of the East John Street/Old Monroe Road widening project from South Trade Street to I-485.
The final step to officially delay the project will come in August, when the N.C. Department of Transportation Board adopts its transportation improvement plan.
The town requested the delay to protect the historic downtown core and allow other transportation projects near East John Street to be completed as scheduled to determine how how traffic patterns are influenced by those projects.
“Our residents want to see Matthews remain a small, friendly town with historic charm, and a welcoming and walkable downtown area,” Mayor Paul Bailey said.
Other sections of the U-4714 project will be widened as scheduled by NCDOT.
