MATTHEWS – An officer with the Matthews Police Department was treated for minor injuries sustained during the arrest of a suspect April 17 at the Best Buy on Matthews Township Parkway.
The officer responded to a call of a fraudulent purchase of a computer for $2,800. When the officer made contact with the suspect inside the store, the suspect ran out the door. As the officer attempted to place him under arrest, the suspect physically resisted and began to assault the officer, according to police.
Darius Najee Battey, 25, of Saint Albans, N.Y., was arrested on charges of attempt to obtain property by false pretenses; resist, obstruct or delay a public officer; and assault with physical injury on a law enforcement officer.
Police said Battey was found to be in the possession of a fraudulent New Jersey identification and had outstanding warrants out of Carteret County for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
