MATTHEWS – Mayor Paul Bailey, Commissioner Barbara Dement, Commissioner Jeff Miller and Town Manager Hazen Blodgett recently traveled to sister city Sainte-Maxime, France.

“We enjoyed a terrific visit to Sainte-Maxime and appreciated learning more about their culture and traditions, as well as honoring the 75th anniversary of D-Day,” Bailey said. “It is important to continue the strong partnership between us.”

During their visit, Bailey, Dement and Miller signed a declaration reaffirming the partnership.

The original declaration was signed in 2015 when Sainte-Maxime officials visited Matthews.

The group marked the 75th anniversary of the Allied landings in the area by paying tribute to fallen soldiers. The group also attended a parade of restored wartime vehicles through the streets of Sainte-Maxime.

Town representatives paid for their own travel and accommodations.
