SHERRILLS FORD – The 41st annual Lake Norman New Year’s Day Barefoot Tournament will feature 14-time World Barefoot Champion Keith St. Onge and Water Ski Hall of Fame inductee Rachel George Normand.
USA Water Ski & Wake Sports selected St. Onge as its 2018 Male Athlete of the Year. Normand took the overall title in the senior women’s division of the 2018 World Barefoot Championships.
The Carolina Show Ski Team hosts the New Year’s Day tournament at Lake Norman Marina, 6965 N.C. 150 E. Admission is free. Concessions are available.
The event is one of the longest running barefoot skiing tournaments in the world. It combines barefoot starts, tricks and endurance skills in a single ride. Contestants receive points for the degree of difficulty of their starting method and tricks they perform, as well as one point for every second on their bare feet.
Lake Norman Marina and the Lake Norman Boat Club pledge to donate $.10 per point earned by all contestants to Samaritan’s Feet.
“The Lake Norman New Year’s Day tournament organizers have been asking me for years to come up and compete,” St. Onge said. “Truthfully, I’m afraid of the cold these days, but I’m excited to be a part of an event that gives back to a cause.”
