Inside the Huddle
The Chargers had a weird season last year, starting 0-3 before they won five straight only to lose their final three games to finish an extremely disappointing 5-6.
But this is a new team who appear ready to battle defending state champ Charlotte Christian for league supremacy.
Cody Cater returns for his third season as the starting quarterback alongside Nickel Fields, also a three-year starter at running back and a dual-threat out of the backfield.
Jesiah Davis, JT Smith and Thomas Flynn should handle much of the pass-catching. Jacolbe Cowan could be a red zone threat, and Fields will catch his share of check downs.
The offensive line is massive with Jackson Concannon and Zach Lohavichan, but strengthened with Kedrick Beasley-Jones, who will switch from tight end to the line.
Defensively, Providence Day should be solid with nine guys who at least started some games last season.
Cowan and Bingley-Jones are both sought after major college recruits whose motors don’t stop. They’ll help Giorgio Antonacci, Spencer Wood and the rest of the ‘backers by shutting down the run.
The secondary is aggressive and experienced with Davis, all-conference safety Mac Hale and others. Junior Sterling Gabriel shines at corner and could see some time on offense.
The Chargers have all of the pieces to seriously compete for the Division I title once again after reaching the championship game the past two seasons. This team has fewer expectations, but greater potential than the one that disappointed last year.
