9 Mecklenburg County hoops teams win in state playoffs

CHAPEL HILL – Nine Mecklenburg County basketball won the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs. Five other teams lost their openers.

Below is how the teams fared this past week. 

Men’s Basketball Bracket

1A

• No. 31 Queen’s Grant lost to No. 2 Corvian Community, 79-52. 

4A 

• No. 1 Myers Park defeatedNo. 32 Mallard Creek, 82-45. Myers Park will play No. 16 Ardrey Kell in the second round at 7:30 p.m. March 1. 

• No. 16 Ardrey Kell defeated No. 17 Southwest Guilford, 70-68. Ardrey Kell will play No. 1 Myers Park in the second round at 7:30 p.m. March 1. 

• No. 19 Butler defeated  No. 14 Hickory Ridge, 64-59. Butler will play No. 3 Weddington in the second round at 7 p.m. March 1.

• No. 9 Independence defeated No. 24 Cox Mill, 70-63. Independence will play No. 8 Watauga in the second round at 7:30 p.m. March 1.

• No. 12 South Meck defeated No. 21 Charlotte Catholic, 81-41. South Meck will play No. 5 North Meck in the second round at 7 p.m. March 1.

Women’s Basketball Bracket

4A

• No. 3 Charlotte Catholic defeated No. 30 South Caldwell, 67-18. Charlotte Catholic will play No. 14 Hickory Ridge in the second round at 6:30 p.m. March 1.

• No. 11 Independence defeated No. 22 South Meck, 77-40. Independence will play No. 6 Marvin Ridge in the second round at 6 p.m. March 1.

• No. 12 Ardrey Kell defeated No. 21 Butler, 73-46. Ardrey plays No. 5 Northern Guilford in the second round at 6 p.m. March 1.

• No. 4 Myers Park defeated No. 29 Hough, 64-44. Myers Park will play No. 13 Porter Ridge in the second round at 6 p.m. March 1.

• No. 26 Providence lost to No. 7 McDowell, 46-39.
